The activities and instructors' stories/experiences were the most valuable pieces of this course. Their experience is so vast and varied that the entire public safety community is represented through the instructors, and they can all provide input from their own experiences.

Which part(s) of the course was LEAST valuable to you? Please explain why.

I think the players in the exercise should have been left to make their own mistakes more often. I understand and appreciate the prompts given by instructors at the boards, but I think there were too many times in which the responders looked like deer in the headlights, and instructors' prompts were the only thing getting them along. Let the incident suffer and have it come out in the hotwash.

This is one course that I feel needed an ICS review. I can't believe I'm actually saying that because I wish it was removed from almost every class. However, I think it was clear that some first responders in this course were in need of a review which would have made the first few activities run smoother.

What other training is most important to you now that you have completed this course?

I would like to get into all-hazard incident specific training courses and dive deeper into the positions explored in this training.

The practical exercises were fantastic. I learned so much about what law enforcement does during these incidents.

The debriefs after the scenarios that weren't led by the instructors turned into compliment-fests. Actual issues that should have been addressed in the debriefs weren't always mentioned.

Emergency Management seemed like an afterthought. There is way more that EM can and should be doing in the course and the scenarios. For example, the reunification exercise was perfect for EM and LE wouldn't have been leading that in reality. EM can also take on intel gathering roles and serve as Area Commanders. Not just LE/FD.

What other training is most important to you now that you have completed this course?

I want to read more AARs from previous incidents.

Learning how LE and Fire Rescue would respond to an active shooter event. This is helpful as an emergency management specialist so I am aware of the potential resources that may be requested. This is important because certain resources will need to requested through different channels.

Additional incident command courses and EOC / IC interface to ensure proper support from the EOC to IC.

As an EM I primarily stayed in an EM role. I understand that in the private sector it is unlikely that I would end up down range - however, in a training environment, it would be helpful to use this time to understand better what is going on down range.
