The Practical Exercises allowed us to see all of the information flow into action. It was easier to process all the information involved with the checklist, after several practical exercises.

Which part(s) of the course was LEAST valuable to you? Please explain why.

The demonstration involving a "radio dispatch" using the checklist. The example was too fast and hard to follow, especially when it is presented towards the beginning of the training/presentation. It seemed very impractical.

Slow down the training a little bit, explaining more points thoroughly (i.e. investigative, staging, etc.). This will allow trainers time to prepare a better presentation incorporating department policies from their respective areas/districts/counties.

The practical exercises. Coming into this course with very little knowledge of the terminology used, the verbal and printed information was difficult to follow and understand. Once the practical exercises began, it all came together and began to make sense.

I'm not sure, it all seemed pretty valuable.

Finding a way for this type of program to work well in smaller jurisdictions. I can see how and why it would work better with large jurisdictions and agencies, but in smaller municipalities not so much. A vast majority of the responders won't know the geography well enough to communicate or understand the communication of locations. EX. How would the 5th responder who will not be from the jurisdiction have any idea of where they might be able to establish a staging area.

Honestly would suggest this be a 2 day course to go into more scenarios so EVERYONE almost has a chance to be in some officer type role.

I would like to take TEMS and get more critical incident training.

I have been to a handful of active killer trainings that focused on response from a tactical perspective (how to enter a room, how to move, etc.). This course tied in very nicely with those prior trainings by focusing on the strategic perspective. It was also beneficial to have professionals from LE, EMS, and fire all working together.

There were some parts that were things I already knew or was trained on, but given that the class had participants with many different experience levels, that is expected and not problematic.

Maybe this has been tried before, but one suggestion would be to send out the power point content out ahead of time, so more time can be focused on scenarios/tabletop exercises.

Just keeping up-to-date on best practices and lessons learned.

Which part(s) of the course was MOST valuable to you. Please explain why.

There are many tools for combating an active shooter but as things have changed over the years, we need to be open to having LE paired off with both Fire and EMS. A tool/tactic that wasn't always received well. I think after the training and continued conversations that realization has been shown. This training should be done county wide and mandatory as we know from start to finish scenes take extreme lengths of time and span vast disciplines in the first responder side. Scenes of this caliber also have many different units/players from all over the area so just because you go into a scene with your local crew, you may be leaving a scene with a completely different crew and that has to be ok, We all need to have the base knowledge to do what's right for the patients/survivors so we get the best outcome.
